What does your family want most?

Posted on Jun 1st, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 01, 2009:

Dscn0466

Odd question for me to try to answer since I do not have a consistent, day-to-day relationship with people I am related to. I have very little relationship with my nuclear family -- their wants generally include being saved from their own lack of self-discipline. My granddaughter and my stepdaughter are my most immediate family close to me -- they are real keen on growing up and having a good life. I don't consider myself part of a family unit, though -- unless one includes the cat.

Where are you on your journey?

Posted on Jun 2nd, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 02, 2009:

Map_of_discovery
I think I just now found the road map, but still haven't figured out how to unfold it or which way is up; and the problem with unfolding maps, of course, is that no one can EVER fold them back the way they were . . . I think there is even a girl scout or boy scout badge for map-folding. Then there is that north south east west stuff and all the side roads, the closed roads, the new roads that are not on the map, and construction . . . no one ever tells you about the construction and the detours. So, I have a map, no destination in mind, but I am on some kind of journey, and as I get the map unfolded and figure out which way I may go each day, I'll keep you posted. Oh, and sometimes, I might take a riverboat or hike off-trail just to mix it up a little.

Where in your life are you happiest?

Posted on Jun 3rd, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 03, 2009:

The_tao_of_happiness

My happiness is measured in degrees of internal awareness, acceptance, and peace. I don't think there is a specific place where I am happiest. It is within the doing of life, the living of my purpose, and the transcendence of my temporary human existence that I find my greatest happiness.

What has happened in your life?

Posted on Jun 6th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 06, 2009:

Gaia

Recently, I have discovered just how inauthentic and deceitful I can be. It is the essence of my inability to maintain lasting friendships, including one with myself. I recently told my boyfriend that I wanted to "leave this relationship" and it is still true . . .that relationship was based on my lack of being truthful (i.e., saying something was okay when it was not, going out of my way to be with him when I needed to be tending to my life). I shared with him that I want to create a new relationship based on my authenticity and honesty. I have several people and events to thank for this, not the least of which is the freedom of space and love on Gaia that allows me to explore who I am.

What new ideas are bubbling in you these days?

Posted on Jun 10th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 09, 2009:

World_heart
Being unreasonable . . . I realized recently that my life mostly falls inside the boundary of playing it safe and only extending myself within predictable outcomes (i.e., I left a full time boring job I hated when I was a single mom and borrowed $60,000 in student loans to get through undergrad and graduate school). While a lot of people "admired" me, it was an "acceptable" risk. Right now I am thinking of unreasonable ways to live a life that reflects more of who I truly am -- letting go of the reasons why I cannot do something or be something. I am opening myself to the possibility that I can be unreasonable in ways that impact the world in a profoundly loving and supportive way.

Where do you find meaning?

Posted on Jun 14th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 14, 2009:

Light_black_and_white
I would have to (once again) rely on Frankl's words. The meaning we create in life comes from how we respond to the people, events, and situations that life brings to us. Some people witness events or have somthing happen to them and then apply a certain meaning to the person, themselves, or the event. Frankl turns it around and places the meaning in our response. It requires one to practice the art of seeing life from another person's point of view, and even to create several points of view. The bottom line is that there is no meaning inherent in any of life -- we create the meaning for ourselves.

Purpose_of_life
. . .  with blatant disregard for my ego . . . with growing authenticity and integrity . . . with honesty that disrobes my clinging illusions exposing them to sunlight where they evaporate like vampire dust. My lessons are not secret -- sharing them invites others to shape them, feed them, transform them, snatch them away and return them changed and different, more than before, and still evolving.

Posted on Jun 18th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 18, 2009:

Happiness_is_wanting_what_you_have
Freedom is inherent in my being -- the freedom to choose what I do, say, think, believe, feel, and become. Life will test how I choose to use my freedom in each and every moment -- the joyful moments as well as the moments of despair -- and each is worth of embracing the lessons beheld within.

What keeps you from being present?

Posted on Jun 19th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 19, 2009:

Hourglass
The question: what happens next? And after that? After that? The greatest challenge to presence is the idea that I have to be someone else than who I truly am in order to make things happen in my life and it is that someone else who is doing all this scheduling, and planning, and coordinating . . . somebody find that person and make her stop! I have a play date with destiny!

What's your most vivid childhood memory?

Posted on Jun 21st, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 21, 2009:

Raggedy_ann_and_andy
Mostly, I remember never having a clue what was going on. As an adult, I am not sure that has changed much. There are many profound snapshots in my memory of working very hard to be happy and never quite succeeding -- an important early discovery that happiness outside of oneself is fleeting at best. Always, though, always there was an acute awareness that life could be better and it was only a matter of me surviving long enough to make that happen.

Cat_writing
I have a few close precious friends who qualify as saints, a spiritual community of special people who are as comfortable as a warm blanket, this slightly kooky online gathering  of souls at Gaia, and the thousands of words written and left behind by people I may never meet but in whom I find myself.

Oh, and the cat.

What's troubling you?

Posted on Jun 24th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 24, 2009:

The_tao_of_happiness
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Labeling events or thoughts or feelings or situations as trouble is just another way of saying "problem." There are no problems . . . it is all just life. If I feel that there is any "trouble" then I only have to look to myself -- feeling troubled is an indicator that I am allowing events or others to pull me away from who I truly am.

How did your grandparents meet?

Posted on Jun 26th, 2009 by barbara : eternal presence barbara
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 26, 2009:

Ellisisland
I haven't a clue about my grandparents . . . there were people fleeing communists in Russia and famine in Europe, boats all over the place at Ellis Island, no one spoke any English, so it is a wonder anyone got it together enough to have any kids (my parents). Those two met at Prospect Park in New York city right at the beginning of WWII. My father was in one of the army divisions who liberated  the Dachau concentration camp (my imagination likes to think that he and Viktor Frankl might have passed by each other).
